Shanghai tours -- shanghai sideways

When we think of tour groups in China, flags, matching caps and megaphones may be the first things that spring to mind. Not exactly an inspiring image for anyone looking for a day of exploration and adventure.

But there are some exceptions to that rule — some great exceptions.

Before MTV News’ ‘Moulin Rouge’ live stream Monday at 3 p.m. ET, Jonas recalls working with director Baz Luhrmann on Broadway’s ‘La Boheme.’

As we gear up for our “Moulin Rouge at 10: A Spectacular Spectacular MTV News Event” on Monday, we are remembering why the movie is so memorable a decade later.

Joe Jonas had the pleasure of working with the flick’s director Baz Luhrmann back in 2003 as a member of the children’s chorus in Luhrmann’s Broadway production of Puccini’s classic opera “La Boheme,” and he has only the fondest memories of the experience.

“It was amazing,” he told MTV News. “Funny story for you: I was in ‘La Boheme,’ [and] I remember being onstage and I didn’t know what stage left or stage right was, and I was really confused, and he told me from the audience, he was like, ‘All right, take a little bit to the stage left.’

“And I was really confused, and I was really embarrassed,” he continued. “I didn’t know what he was talking about. He literally walked up onstage and he acted like he was talking to me, and he whispered in my ear, like, ‘Go a little bit to the left.’ So, for me, the fact that a director would be so cool with me like that, from then on, I was so blown away that he was so cool.”

Jonas, who has since gone on to superstardom and even starred in two successful TV musicals (“Camp Rock” and “Camp Rock 2″) credits Luhrmann’s forward-thinking vision in “Moulin Rouge” for pop culture’s current obsession with the genre.

“I think he’s an amazing director, and his credits are unbelievable,” he said. ” ‘Moulin Rouge’ is one of the best movies of all time, and there’s no doubt in that. And I think it really has started a generation of music into TV [and] movies so openly.”

MTV News will reunite Luhrmann, Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor to celebrate “Moulin Rouge at 10: A Spectacular Spectacular MTV News Event” on Monday, May 2, at 3 p.m. ET on MTV.com. The director and stars will be joined by co-star John Leguizamo, who played artist Toulouse-Lautrec, and Catherine Martin, who won the Oscar for costume design and art direction. Hosted by MTV News’ Josh Horowitz, the live stream will include special appearances and live interviews while looking back at how the film came to be and how its legacy continues to grow.

To get in on the fun, fans can submit questions for the “Moulin Rouge” director and talent via the @MTVNews Twitter handle with the hashtag #AskMoulin.

Don’t miss “Moulin Rouge at 10: A Spectacular Spectacular MTV News Event” on Monday at 3 p.m. ET on MTV.com! Get in the conversation by tweeting @MTVNews with the hashtag #AskMoulin.

Alvaro Bautista has passed the second hurdle on his way to recovery after breaking his femur during practice at Qatar. After receiving the go-ahead from the surgeon supervising his recovery, Dr Villamor, earlier this week, the Rizla Suzuki rider has now also been passed fit to ride by the Estoril circuit doctor, Dr Sarmento. Bautista faces one final test, and that is a personal one, of how he feels on the bike. He will evaluate whether he feels strong enough to race during free practice on Friday, and if he feels comfortable, will take part in Sunday's Portuguese MotoGP round at Estoril. If Bautista does not race, then Suzuki test rider Nobu Aoki will take his place, as the Japanese veteran is already on hand to take part in the MotoGP test scheduled for the Monday after the race.

Below is the press release from the Rizla Suzuki team:

With Kurt back at McKinley, we’re worried about the fate of ‘Klaine.’
By Jim Cantiello

A scene from the “Born This Way” episode of “Glee”
Photo: Adam Rose/FOX

This week’s special 90-minute “Born This Way” episode of “Glee” kind of didn’t need to be 90 minutes long, and to be honest, we were a little taken aback by the way the show seemed to equate insecurities about being gay with insecurities about wearing glasses. But if that what it takes for them to do a flash-mob scene featuring “Barbra Streisand,” we’ll take it. Sing along with the lyrics below.

Come on, Gleeks!
Do you believe in plot?
Well, I got something to say about it,
And it goes a little something like this.

[To the tune of "Born This Way"]

Rachel gets smacked, has a broken nose,
Considers having a rhinoplasty.
It sparks a 90-minute episode
Of loving who you’re meant to be.

She gets talked out of it when Finn reacts,
And a flash mob says, “Girl, it’s a mistake.”
That shopping mall scene was so much damn fun.
Hold up a minute, is that Drake?! [Shot of the dude on the escalator that looks a lot like Drake]

Kurt’s back at McKinley, yay!
Gives New Directions cache.
“Glee” ‘s on the right track, babe,
Just don’t forget about Klaine.
I won’t dare tell you a lie
When Blaine sang Keane, oh, I cried.
“Glee” ‘s on the right track, babe,
Just don’t forget about Klaine.

Oooh, Karovsky’s super gay,
Checking out Sam’s bootay,
Just don’t you forget about Klaine!
Blaine’s mouth opens all the way
Holy crap is his jaw OK?
Just don’t you forget about Klaine!

“Glee” was a drag
Over prom queens.
No need for this to be 90!

“Glee” don’t worry, I’m here to stay,
Even if I dis your way,
I love you, don’t forget about Klaine!
NO NEED FOR THIS TO BE 90!

“Unpretty” with Quinn Fabray,
That duet made me hit replay!
I love you, don’t forget about Klaine!

“Glee” was a drag
Over prom queens.
Santana was so frickin’ mean.
“I’ll be your beard to win a crown
And in the process take Quinn down!”

Lauren finds Quinn’s secret past:
She used to have a giant ass,
Which according to “Glee” is one in the same
As being flamboyantly gay.

[Jim rants.] Seriously, “Glee”? You’re going to equate Mr. Shue’s “butt chin” and Artie’s poor eyesight, and Finn’s inability to dance with homosexuality? And did anyone else find it weird that they sang “Born This Way” but cut out the verse about actually being gay? I know I’m hard on you every week, “Glee,” but I can’t help it. I guess I was just born that way.

SPDY in Google Chrome
We’re not entirely sure of the time line here, but it looks like Google has now rolled out the SPDY HTTP replacement to its full bevy of Web services, including Gmail, Docs, and YouTube. If you’re currently using Google’s Chrome browser you’re probably already using SPDY.

We originally reported on SPDY way back in November 2009, when Google introduced it as yet another experiment in making the Web faster, like Go, Native Client and speculative pre-connections. Over the last 18 months, though, SPDY support has found its way into the stable build of Chrome.

SPDY is basically a streamlined and more efficient version of HTTP. At its most basic, SPDY introduces parallel, multiplexed streams over a single TCP connection — but at the same time, SPDY allows for prioritization, so that vital content (HTML) can be sent before periphery content (JavaScript, video). All in all, the SPDY protocol can halve page load times, which is obviously rather significant.

The best bit, though, is that SPDY is an open-source project. HTTP 1.1 is a lumbering beast that needs to be replaced before low-latency real-time computing really becomes a reality, and SPDY is one of the best options currently on the table. To be honest, we’re not sure why SPDY hasn’t received more coverage — it’s awesome in every way. At the moment, though, the only way to help speed up SPDY’s proliferation, is with an experimental Apache mod.

As far as actually ‘trying it out,’ your best bet is downloading Chrome, hitting up some Google sites, and then checking chrome://net-internals to see your active SPDY sessions. SPDY is a transparent replacement for HTTP, though, and as such it’s rather hard to see its effects. Google’s sites definitely feel fast in Chrome, but there are more technologies than just SPDY at work.

Yahoo Messenger Big Brother censorshipWe’ve all thought it, but never dared think it could be true: what if Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL actively monitor our instant messenger chats? What if mentions of ‘bomb’ and ‘underage’ are tracked and sent to law enforcement agencies? What if chat providers don’t agree with the things we say, or the links we share, and filter or censor the content of our transmitted messages?

Well, it looks like our fears may actually have some basis in reality: Yahoo Messenger strips FilesTube links from instant messages. It doesn’t tell either party that a URL has been removed from chat — it just deletes it. Poof. FilesTube, in case you were wondering, is one of the largest file hosting meta search engines on the Web — it indexes RapidShare, Megaupload, Mediafire, and many other ‘cyberlocker’ services.

It’s fairly obvious why FilesTube links are being removed — the Censor General at Yahoo is probably one of those perplexed primates who think all uses of BitTorrent are illegal — but this situation poses a far more important question: is Yahoo censoring messages on the client side, or the server side. Does the messenger client itself maintain a list of ‘blacklisted’ words — and if so, why are we not told that FilesTube links are banned? What other words and terms does Yahoo protect us from?
